How is a BaZi chart read?
Your birth year, month, day, and hour each become two characters — a heavenly stem and an earthly branch — for eight characters in all. Reading which of the five elements the eight lean toward, and what relationships (the Ten Gods) they form with one another, is the practice of BaZi. Building the eight characters is fixed arithmetic; the interpretation begins after that.
Can I get a reading without knowing my birth time?
Yes. The chart is built from six characters instead of eight, leaving out the hour pillar. Temperament, the shape of money and work, and how you meet people all still read; only the passages that require the hour pillar are skipped. Knowing the time sharpens both the Zi Wei chart and date selection.
What is true solar time correction?
Korea sets its clocks to 135° east, but Seoul sits near 127° east, so the clock and the actual position of the sun differ by roughly thirty minutes. Enter a birthplace and the birth moment is recalculated at that longitude before the hour pillar is set. For anyone born near the boundary of an hour branch, this single correction changes the pillar.
