What Is BaZi (Saju)? Twelve Questions Answered

What the eight characters are, and what compatibility, the Tojeong Secret, and Samjae each look at. Twelve questions answered, including what to do when you do not know your birth hour and whether the date you enter is stored.

What is BaZi, or Saju?

Your birth year, month, day, and hour are each written as two characters — a heavenly stem and an earthly branch — eight characters in all. Reading the balance of the five elements among them and the relationships they form, called the Ten Gods, is the practice of BaZi.

Is SaJuBaZi free?

The chart, compatibility, the Tojeong Secret, naming, Zi Wei Dou Shu, date selection, and the dream dictionary are all free. Signing in is needed only for consultations with Wolha and for saving charts.

Can I get a reading without knowing my birth time?

Yes. The chart is built from six characters instead of eight, and only the readings that need the hour pillar are skipped. Knowing the time sharpens the Zi Wei chart and date selection.

What does a compatibility reading look at?

It starts from the relationship between the two day stems, then weighs the harmonies and clashes among the earthly branches and whether one chart supplies the element the other lacks. Add the Chinese characters of a name and the element each character carries is read as well.

How is the Tojeong Secret different from a BaZi reading?

A BaZi reading is a map of the whole life, drawn from the chart you were born with. The Tojeong Secret draws a hexagram for one particular year and reads the flow of its twelve months. It needs only a birth date.

Is the birth date I enter stored?

Not unless you sign in. The chart is carried in the address bar and calculated from there. Only charts you sign in and save yourself are kept on your account, and you can delete them at any time.

What is today's fortune based on?

It reads the ten-god relation between the day's pillar (its stem and branch) and the heavenly stem of your birth year. The twelve animal signs are split by birth year, so the same sign reads differently across years.

How is Samjae calculated?

Your birth branch belongs to a trine, and that trine fixes three Samjae years: entering, staying, leaving. It marks a stretch with less force behind you rather than settled misfortune.

What is a name chosen on?

The elements missing from the chart are filled by the inherent element of the hanja in the name. Sound elements and stroke counts are weighed too, and every candidate is drawn from characters legally usable in a given name.

How does Zi Wei Dou Shu differ from Four Pillars?

Four Pillars reads the elemental relations among eight characters. Zi Wei Dou Shu places stars across twelve palaces from your lunar birth date and hour. One maps temperament; the other maps the domains of a life.

What makes a date good for date selection?

Each purpose — marriage, moving, opening a business, signing — avoids different days. The choice weighs whether the day's pillar clashes with your day master and whether that day lends force to that particular act.

How do I look up a dream?

Search by the symbol that appeared in the dream. Common symbols such as snake, water, fire and teeth are entries alongside rarer ones, and each carries its traditional reading and the area of life it points to.
