Early spring · Yin month (寅)

A river beginning to run as the ice breaks. Ren water in the Tiger month is when what was held finds its first direction, so stored force turns into visible movement. The channel is still narrow: settle where it should run and it swells that way all through spring.

Mid spring · Mao month (卯)

A river passing through and watering a forest. Ren water in the Rabbit month keeps handing what it has to the trees, so the reward of raising things is large while the body shrinks. Knowing what one is raising is the knack of this seat: with earth to catch it, the flow does not simply leak away.

Late spring · Chen month (辰)

A reservoir held by an embankment. Ren water in the Dragon month has earth catching the water, so what was flowing takes a shape and stays for the first time. Freedom narrows and usefulness appears: deciding where the held water will be led is when this person's force starts reaching others.

Early summer · Si month (巳)

A river beginning to shrink in the sun. Ren water in the Snake month opens the door of heat, so more goes out than comes in. Securing a source matters more than spending here: metal to generate the water is what keeps it from running dry all summer.

Midsummer · Wu month (午)

A river whose bed is starting to show. Ren water in the Horse month meets peak heat, the flow thins, and a person who was wide feels themselves narrowing. Metal here is not stinginess but a headwater: one relationship that feeds water back decides the width of this summer.

Late summer · Wei month (未)

Water gone turbid behind dry earth. Ren water in the Goat month has parched soil filling the channel, so the flow slows and the sediment never settles. Clarity does not arrive on its own here: metal to generate water and a channel to open are what make this person's judgment transparent again.

Early autumn · Shen month (申)

A river with a new spring broken open. Ren water in the Monkey month has Metal generating water, so what had been shrinking fills again and the color clears. Recovery is visible in this season, though without a channel decided beforehand it scatters in every direction as fast as it rises.

Mid autumn · You month (酉)

A river grown clear and deep. Ren water in the Rooster month faces Metal at its purest and is fed without pause, so neither volume nor clarity is lacking. Only overflow needs guarding against here: settle in advance where it runs and what will hold it, and this abundance converts directly into results.

Late autumn · Xu month (戌)

A river with mud mixed in. Ren water in the Dog month has dry earth trying to hold it and the flow turning cloudy, so the force that protects and the force that muddies arrive wearing the same face. Metal to filter is what is needed: telling apart what to keep from what to let go is how this water clears again.

Early winter · Hai month (亥)

A great river that has met its own place. Ren water in the Pig month opens the door of Water, so the flow meets no obstruction and can go anywhere. Being able to go is not the same as having to go: raising a bank to set a direction is what keeps this breadth from dispersing and leaves it as force.

Deep winter · Zi month (子)

A river swollen in midwinter. Ren water in the Rat month is where Water gathers largest, so the volume overflows while the surface freezes and all that quantity cannot move. Bank and sun are both needed: something to make it flow and something to hold it are what put this person's large capacity to actual use.

Late winter · Chou month (丑)

Snow lying over a frozen river. Ren water in the Ox month has earth damming it and cold setting it, so from outside it looks as though nothing at all is happening. Inside it is still moving: when sun comes, that submerged time shows itself as preparation that was not wasted.

Wood (木)

For a Ren-water day master, wood being the remedy means deep water is finally put to use nurturing something. Once wisdom and ambition stop being merely held in and are let flow into teaching or making, that depth reveals itself to the world. This is where water that only used to seep in gets to watch something grow.

How to use it Do not spare the wisdom you carry — let it flow out into teaching, writing, or work. Flowing that way is how it gets refilled.

Fire (火)

For a Ren-water day master, fire being the remedy means wisdom as deep as the ocean meets something it can handle and warm, and turns into actual heat. Ambition alone, however great and flexible, leaves nothing in hand — once the power to govern and put to use takes hold, that depth becomes fruit. Practical work that turns it into an asset begins here.

How to use it Do not only draw the big picture — start actually managing something small enough to handle. It is the first step toward turning depth into fruit.

Earth (土)

For a Ren-water day master, earth being the remedy means even a great river overflows and loses itself without a bank. For Ren-water, ambitious and flexible, discipline and boundaries do not take away freedom — they protect direction. The flowing force only reaches its destination once it meets a bank.

How to use it Do not feel stifled by a set deadline or scope. Let it be the bank that carries overflowing ambition all the way to its destination.

Metal (金)

For a Ren-water day master, metal being the remedy means even the wide ocean would run dry without a source that feeds it. For Ren-water, prone to assuming it already knows everything, time spent learning and being supported becomes the root that keeps it from losing direction. Receiving does not disturb its flexibility — it holds it up.

How to use it Do not try to flow widely alone. Accept a mentor or support close by — that becomes the source that keeps you from losing your way.

Water (水)

For a Ren-water day master, another Ren-water being the remedy means even a great river must merge with other streams before it reaches the sea. Ambition this large is sometimes too much for one alone to carry. Merging with people heading the same direction leads to arrival rather than overflow.

How to use it Do not try to carry the whole big picture alone. Merging with people flowing in the same direction reaches the destination faster.
